Heather - Day 2 (2/27)

A week in the life of a teacher: Day 2 (Monday)
8:15-8:50: Before school
It was a great morning. I walked into my classroom, and the sun was streaming in. I can see the city skyline from my window -just beautiful. I put on some music, ate my breakfast and graded some papers. It was heavenly. The kids started coming in around 8:25. We chit chatted. I made the copies I needed. Great morning. Hall duty 8:50-8:55.
8:55-10:30: English I Esl/standard (27 students)
We had a bit of a slow start (everyone seemed tired) and I had a phone call from guidance right away, but we defined some tone words, did our movements to help us remember the definitions of literary devices, read the climax chapter of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, and we started writing personal narratives. Ten students came in 5-15 minutes late because of late buses or being dropped off late. It's hard to get started and stay consistent when so many students come in late every day.
2nd Period: Honors Shakespeare
We're reading Twelfth Night, but the ACT is being given in my room tomorrow so everything on the walls has to be covered. We spend the first 15 min of class covering the walls when we run out of paper. The other big rolls of paper are in the library. I send three students to get more paper: the library is closed for testing. I am supposed to have everything covered by 3:30, but another teacher teaches in my room during my planning. I am frustrated. We read, discuss, and watch some Twelfth Night. I vacate my classroom at noon for another teacher coming in.
3rd Period/lunch: 12:00-2:00 Planning
I spend the first part of planning in the teacher eating and reviewing my lesson plan for my 4th period. It is hard to have planning in the workroom during 3rd period because many teachers are in and out during all three lunches. I am trying to put comments for revision on ten essays before 4th period. After 50 min of working, I have to go to the cafeteria for lunch duty. I sit outside on a bench or walk around monitoring the students at the picnic area. The students are tame today. At 1:15 I head back to the workroom where I put comments on six essays.
2:00-3:40: 4th period AP Lit, seniors (30 students)
I promised them information explaining school vouchers and charter schools, so we watch two short youtube videos. We discuss Their reading for Jane Eyre, and they write Sestina poems about Jane Eyre. Two announcements are made on the intercom disrupting the class to have juniors go pre-bubble for the ACT. Three students leave early for early release for sports and miss half the class. At 2:20 the daytime announcements are made again, completely interrupting the flow of the class. After the announcements We put the desks into rows so they are ready for tomorrow's testing. I spend my last 20 minutes before leaving at 4 packing up all the books and worksheets I need to teach tomorrow because I am being displaced to another building due to ACT Testing.
